Go Green! Opt for healthier and environmental friendly nail polish! How to do that? Read on..
Basically all you need to do is to go for polishes that are free of three toxic chemicles; Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde and Toluene.
What are these chemicles?
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a plasticiser that are used in polishes to prevent chips and cracks.
Formaldehyde is used as a nail hardener and to quicken nail-drying process. They are found widely in polishes because they are cheap, and work extremely well as preservatives.
Toluene is a solvent used to ‘cairkan’ the polishes for easy application and smooth finishing as well as promoting quick drying process. Its usually found in gasoline, paint thinners, adhesives, glues, shoe polish etc (notice how some polishes stink similar to these? It contains toluene!)
So?? What do they do to us/our nails?
DBP
- Is a teratogenic (causes birth defects) so polishes containing this toxin is a big no for pregnant mother
- Is a Carcinogenic (causes cancer) although there isn’t direct link proving this as yet.
Formaldehyde
- Inhaling too much of it can trigger breathing difficulties that can further lead to asthma
- Eye irritation (watery eyes and burning sensation)
Toulene:
- Dizziness and headache
- If used too long (especially nail biters) it could lead to severe damage of your kidney and liver.
Oh God! Are they Really that bad?
