GO GREEN! SAY NO TO THE BIG 3 (POLISH TOXIC)

Go Green! Opt for healthier and environmental friendly nail polish! How to do that? Read on..

Basically all you need to do is to go for polishes that are free of three toxic chemicles; Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde and Toluene.

What are these chemicles?
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a plasticiser that are used in polishes to prevent chips and cracks.
Formaldehyde is used as a nail hardener and to quicken nail-drying process. They are found widely in polishes because they are cheap, and work extremely well as preservatives.
Toluene is a solvent used to ‘cairkan’ the polishes for easy application and smooth finishing as well as promoting quick drying process. Its usually found in gasoline, paint thinners, adhesives, glues, shoe polish etc (notice how some polishes stink similar to these? It contains toluene!)
So?? What do they do to us/our nails?
DBP
  •     Is a teratogenic (causes birth defects) so polishes containing this toxin is a big no for pregnant mother
  •     Is a Carcinogenic (causes cancer) although there isn’t direct link proving this as yet.
Formaldehyde
  •     Inhaling too much of it can trigger breathing difficulties that can further lead to asthma
  •     Eye irritation (watery eyes and burning sensation)
Toulene:
  •     Dizziness and headache
  •     If used too long (especially nail biters) it could lead to severe damage of your kidney and liver.
Oh God! Are they Really that bad?

Personally, im not really convinced that they are all that bad. I mean come on all chemicals have their down sides, like duh! Or they wouldn’t be called CHEMICLES! But of course too much of it wouldn’t be good as well. It depends on the individual preference. If you’ve used it and don’t care about these stuff then by all means do not let this stop you. But if you are paranoid after this post then I would suggest you to opt for the safer polishes not containing these ingredients. The brands? Its listed below:

BREATH LIFE;BREATH OF HOPE

O.P.I. breath life is a milky bluish shimmery colour that was created for a good cause- to cure (yes cure! not prevent) lung cancer. How to cure? By providing the necessary funds for early detection and diagnosis, there might be chances that the patient gets early treatment that can prolong one's life. Read on to see what OPI has to say about this good cause..

So We Can All Breathe Easier
New OPI Breathe Life Nail Lacquer Supports
New Lung Cancer Foundation of America
The facts can leave you breathless: Lung cancer is the #1 killer of women, making it more deadly than the six next largest cancer killers combined. And 60% of new lung cancer victims will be non-smokers.
For these reasons, OPI is proud to join with the Lung Cancer Foundation of America(LCFA). LCFA’s primary goal is not just to prevent lung cancer, but to cure it. To help “breathe life” into raising funds for early detection, diagnosis, and a cure, OPI has created an exclusive new Nail Lacquer called Breathe Life – a fresh-air, silvery-blue.

“The statistics are shocking. Lung cancer has stopped our breathing long enough, and we need to stop it now,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Executive VP & Artistic Director.

In addition to this new Nail Lacquer, OPI has also made a donation to LCFA. “BecauseLCFA is a new organization, working on the frontlines at the grassroots level, every dollar contributed makes a tremendous impact,” Weiss-Fischmann says.

Matte About You..

Hey Girls..
Guess what I found on NailMag Dec 09 cover feature??
Our very own favorite matte!! It looks hot!!

I know I know im getting OTT with these mattes but I just cant help it. They are simply gorgeous. It might be dull but hey.. It’s the in thing for 2009/2010! Leave the shines behind and go matte!! Anyway, just for extra nail art tips, I’ve found an entry in nailmag suggesting to pair matte with its shinny version to create a monochromic  French look.! I was a bit skeptical about it but after looking at the pics, waola!! It looks perfect! Way better than just applying top coat to create the French-y look..

Here are some of the colours for you.. it can be applied to suede too to achieve a lighter base and darker tips.. Good Luck!!
